Ryan Anderson, M.S.

BiographyRyan Anderson

Ryan Anderson, M.S., is a fourth year doctoral student in Clinical and Health Psychology concentrating in health psychology. Ryan obtained his undergraduate degree in psychology and music from Washington University in St. Louis, and his master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Florida. Before beginning his doctoral studies at UF, Ryan spent eight years working in the Washington University Department of Psychiatry on clinical treatment trials of depression in patients with diabetes.

Research Focus

Broadly, Ryan’s research focus is on the interaction between psychobehavioral factors and medical illness in adults. Specifically, under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Robinson, his recent research has focused on behavioral aspects of chronic pain conditions. To better understand why (or why not) adults with chronic pain engage in behavioral treatment for their medical condition, Ryan’s dissertation is examining the cognitive-motivational influences on health behavior change in patients with widespread pain. Ryan also serves as cognitive-behavioral therapist on a clinical trial treating insomnia and pain in patients with fibromyalgia and sleep disturbance. Using data from this study, his master’s thesis examined the contribution of sleep variables to a predictive model of clinical pain in fibromyalgia. Prior to his work at UF, Ryan’s research focused on the prevalence and treatment of depression in adults with diabetes.

Clinical Focus

Clinically, Ryan enjoys assessing and treating a broad spectrum of psychological conditions in adults, from inter-personal relationship problems to those who struggle with psychotic disorders. Helping adults better manage their chronic medical illness has been a more specific focus of Ryan’s clinical work. He has gained experience in the assessment and treatment of psychosocial factors associated with medical conditions in a variety of inpatient and outpatient medical settings, including adults with pain, insomnia, cancer, and orthopedic trauma. Ryan is also interested in providing mental health assessment and treatment in a multidisciplinary primary care setting.
