Erin Ferguson, M.S.

Erin Ferguson

Biography

Erin is a fifth-year graduate student in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology. She graduated summa cum laude from Spelman College in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a minor in public health. Her undergraduate honors thesis examined the role of body image in sexual behavior for middle aged African American women.  She has worked on a wide range of research projects related to health psychology and risky behaviors, involving topics such as HIV/AIDS and risky sexual behavior prevention, substance use, and treatment adherence in adolescents with sickle cell disease. Erin is on the Clinical Health Psychology track and works in the Center for Pain Research and Behavioral Health under the mentorship of Dr. Jeff Boissoneault. She is also currently completing a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in Epidemiology.

Research Focus

Erin’s research interests broadly concern the investigation of psychosocial and cultural factors that may influence health outcomes for people living with chronic health conditions. Specifically, she is interested in identifying motives, use patterns, and consequences of substance use for individuals living with chronic diseases, particularly among underrepresented and racial minority populations. Her current research focuses on substance use for coping/self-management purposes among those with chronic pain. Her dissertation study, funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), will investigate the impact of experimentally-induced musculoskeletal pain on demand for alcohol and cannabis among co-users. This project will also attempt identify relevant psychosocial risk factors involved in the relationship.
