Each year the Society of Pediatric Psychology (Division 54 of APA) awards student grants in three categories, and then one additional award for the outstanding paper published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology over the past year! I am excited and proud to announce that three UF students in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology were awarded some of the top honors out of the 60 applicants submitted this year!
Casey Lawless and Julia Carmody have just been recognized as the co-winners of the prestigious Marion and Donald Routh Student Research Grant Award, which is an annual research scholar grant program for current student members of SPP in full-time psychology graduate programs (i.e. graduate students or interns) conducting research under the supervision of a faculty advisor. The first prize award is $5,000 and runner-up award is $1,000. Casey Lawless and Julia Carmody tied for first place, and the review committee decided to split the first and second place awards; thus each will receive $3,000 to support their dissertation research. Casey’s project is titled “The Longitudinal Impact of Sleep in Children with Cystic Fibrosis”. Julia’s project is titled “Longitudinal Analysis of Psychosocial Factors Impacting Health Related Quality of Life and Health Care Costs in Adolescents with Inflammatory Bowel Disease”.
And not to be outdone, Sarah Westen has been recognized as the winner is the Mary Jo Kupst Trainee Grant for Research in Resilience. This grant is designed to help facilitate trainee research that will provide a novel contribution and advance the field of pediatric psychology specifically in the area of resilience and/or family functioning. Sarah will receive $1000 to support her dissertation research on “Disease-Specific Psychological Factors and Adherence in Youth with Type 1 Diabetes on Multiple Daily Injections and Insulin Pump Therapy: The Mediating Role of Family Responsibility Sharing.” Sarah was also recently profiled in the Student Spotlight of the APA Div 54/SPP Diabetes Special Interest Group!
