Karlyn Vatthauer, B.S., awarded Abstract Meritorious Award

Karlyn Vatthauer received an Abstract Meritorious Award from the Sleep Research Society for her 1st year project entitled, “Sleep Predicts Resting Brain Activity in Fibromyalgia Participants with Insomnia”. Her abstract was accepted as an oral presentation, which she gave at the 2012 Associated Professional Sleep Societies Conference (SLEEP) this June in Boston, MA. She analyzed data collected as part of an ARRA Supplemental award to a NIAMS funded project entitled, Sleep and Pain Interventions in Fibromyalgia: Hyperalgesia and Central Sensitization (SPIN; AR055160 & AR055160-S1; McCrae, PI). The parent project uses psychophysical and behavioral measures to evaluate changes in Central Sensitization as a result of cognitive behavioral treatments of insomnia (CBTi) and pain (CBTp). The Supplemental award extends the aims of the parent grant to include the investigation of the neural underpinnings of those changes. Karlyn works in the Sleep Research Lab under the mentorship of Dr. Christina McCrae.
