Goals, Activities, and Outcomes
GOAL 1. To produce graduates who have the requisite knowledge and skills in psychological assessment for entry level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge of data-based approaches to psychological assessment.
- B. Acquire the skills to conceptualize the causative and maintaining factors contributing to the client's adaptive and maladaptive patterns of behaviors, emotions, and cognitions.
- C. Acquire knowledge and appreciation of the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological assessment.
Competencies:
- Ability to select appropriate assessment procedures tailored to the individual client's needs or diagnosis.
- Ability to develop and maintain patient rapport during assessment procedures.
- Ability to conduct interviews for the purpose of establishing DSM-IV diagnoses and developing appropriate treatment plans.
- Ability to administer and interpret standardized psychological tests.
- Ability to integrate assessment data derived from testing, interviews, behavioral observations, and other sources of information.
- Ability to understand the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological assessment.
Activities:
- Complete one or more quarterly assessment/consultation rotations (1 day per week for 12 weeks) in child/pediatric psychology, in medical/health psychology, and in clinical neuropsychology.
- Complete four quarterly assessment/consultation rotations (1 day per week for 48 weeks) in one of the following areas: child/pediatric psychology, medical/health psychology, clinical neuropsychology, or rural health psychology.
- Receive two or more hours of individual or groups supervision per week devoted to psychological assessment.
- Attend department case conferences, clinic team meetings, didactic seminars, and specialty track meetings.
Proximal outcomes:
- 1) Demonstrate advanced or entry-level skills in psychological assessment within specialty track.
- 2) Demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills in psychological assessment in areas outside specialty track.
Assessment of proximal outcomes:
- quarterly ratings of competency by supervisors
- self-assessments by interns at beginning and end of the training year
- results of patient satisfaction surveys
- results of CQI activities
- attainment of postdoctoral or entry level positions
Distal outcomes:
- 1) Demonstrate knowledge and skills in psychological assessment sufficient for licensure as a psychologist.
- 2) Demonstrate knowledge and skills in psychological assessment sufficient for hospital practice privileges.

GOAL 2. To produce graduates who have the requisite knowledge and skills in consultation and communication for entry level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge of the appropriate role of a psychologist as a consultant.
- B. Acquire the skills to understand and respond effectively to professional consultation questions.
- C. Acquire knowledge and appreciation of the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological assessment.
Competencies:
- 1. Ability to conduct a psychological assessment required to provide an appropriate consultation response.
- 2. Ability to formulate an appropriate response to the consultation question.
- 3. Ability to present oral feedback to the referral source in a cogent manner.
- 4. Ability to provide effective written communication to other professionals.
- 5. Ability to communicate effectively with patients (and their families when appropriate) regarding the outcome of a consultation.
- 6. Ability to communicate effectively to a group of professionals.
- 7. Ability to understand the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological consultations.
Activities:

GOAL 3. To produce graduates who have the requisite knowledge and skills in psychotherapeutic interventions for entry level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge of theory and research literature regarding psychotherapeutic interventions (including empirically supported treatments).
- B. Acquire the skills to implement an effective psychotherapeutic intervention.
- C. Acquire knowledge of the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological interventions.
Competencies:
- 1. Ability to devise of individually-tailored treatment plan based on an appropriate psychological assessment of the patient's problems/diagnosis.
- 2. Ability to develop an effective working relationship with the patient.
- 3. Ability to implement effective psychotherapeutic interventions for a variety of presenting problems/diagnoses.
- 4. Ability to implement effective psychotherapeutic interventions with patients of both sexes, of different ages (children/adolescents as well as adults), and from varying socio-cultural backgrounds.
- 5. Ability to understand the influence of cultural and individual diversity factors in psychological treatment.
Activities:
- a. Carry an ongoing psychotherapy caseload of 5-8 patients per week.
- b. Carry a caseload with a diversity of patients with respect to presenting problems, diagnoses, sex, age, and social-cultural backgrounds.
- c. Implement a variety of psychotherapeutic intervention modalities (e.g., individual, group, family, or couples therapy).
- d. Receive 0.5 hours of individual supervision per therapy case per week.
- e. Attend department case conferences, clinic team meetings, didactic clinical seminars, and specialty track meetings (minimum of 150 hours per year).
Proximal outcomes:
- 1) Demonstrate advanced or entry-level skills in psychological intervention within his or her specialty track.
- 2) Demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills in psychological assessment in areas other than his or her specialty track.

GOAL 4. To produce graduates with the requisite knowledge of professional standards, ethics, and legal issues for entry level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge APA Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct and APA practice guidelines (e.g., the general guidelines for service providers as well as those pertaining to record keeping, child custody evaluations, assessment of dementia, therapy with gay, lesbian and bisexual clients, etc.).
- B. Acquire knowledge of State of Florida statute relevant the practice of psychology.
Competencies:
- 1. Ability to apply ethical decision making in the context of professional practice.
- 2. Ability to apply relevant legal consideration in the context of professional practice.
- 3. Ability to demonstrate appropriate professional standards of behavior with regard to interactions with patients, staff, students, supervisors, other professionals, and the public.
Activities:
- a. Attend department case conferences, clinic team meetings, didactic clinical seminars, and specialty track meetings specifically devoted to ethical and legal issues (minimum of 10 hours per year).
- b. Discuss consideration of ethical, legal, and professional standards in the context of individual and group supervision on an ongoing basis.
- c. Present and discuss in the intern seminar one ethical dilemma (personally encountered) and methods for its resolution.

GOAL 5. To produce graduates with requisite knowledge and respect of cultural and individual diversity for entry-level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge and respect for cultural and individual diversity including personal and demographic characteristics such as age, color, disabilities, ethnicity, gender, language, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status
Competence:
- 1. Display the ability to integrate human diversity considerations into psychological assessment, consultation, intervention, and research.
Activities:
- a. Attend the 4-hour seminar series on human diversity in the practice of psychology.
- b. Attend the 3-hour seminar series on working with gay, lesbian, and bisexual patients.
- c. Attend the 3-hour seminar series on conducting couples and family therapy with persons from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds.
- d. Discuss during individual and supervision the influence of diversity issues in the context of psychological assessment and treatment.

GOAL 6. To produce graduates with the requisite knowledge of the strategies of scholarly inquiry and methods of supervision and clinical teaching for entry level practice of professional psychology.
Objectives:
- A. Acquire knowledge of the empirical basis of practice, the clinical value of research, and appropriate methods of scholarly inquiry.
- B. Acquire knowledge of appropriate methods for clinical teaching and supervision.
Competence:
- 1. Ability to evaluate the research literature for clinical meaningfulness, scientific rigor, and relevance to diverse patient populations.
- 2. Ability to apply the theoretical and empirical literature to professional practice.
- 3. Ability to understand the factors that contribute to effective supervision and clinical teaching.
Activities:
- a. Participation in a clinical research endeavor as a collaborator, co-investigator or observer, on a limited basis (e.g., 10% time), during the course of the internship year.
- b. Attend department case conferences, clinic team meetings, didactic clinical seminars, and specialty track meetings devoted to clinical research issues.
- c. Attend seminar series on clinical teaching and supervision (2 hours).
Proximal outcomes:
- 1) Demonstrate advanced or entry-level knowledge of strategies of scholarly inquiry and methods of clinical teaching.
- 2) Demonstrate intermediate to advance knowledge of clinical teaching methods.
Assessment of proximal outcomes:

- intern presentations at scientific/professional conferences
- intern authorship of scientific or scholarly publications
Distal outcomes:
- 1) Demonstrate knowledge of strategies of scholarly inquiry sufficient for licensure as a psychologist.
- 2) Contribute to knowledge in the field through scientific and professional presentations and publications.
- 3) Contribute to the education of future psychologists through teaching or clinical supervision.
