The Jenny Sivinski Memorial Award for Excellence in Community Service

The Department announces the creation of a new award in memory of Jenny Sivinski, a student in the Ph.D. program, who died on August 10, 2006. The new award is entitled the "Jenny Sivinski Memorial Award for Excellence in Community Service" and will recognize effort and achievement among our graduate students in performing community service activities that benefit the lives of children and families in the North Central Florida community. Such service occupied a central place in Jenny’s remarkable life.

The goal is to eventually endow this award, and a fund will be established in Jenny’s name to support this goal.

Department of Clinical and Health Psychology Wins APA Award

The Department of Clinical and Health Psychology has been selected as one of two national recipients of the American Psychological Association's (APA) Departmental Award for the Culture of Service in the Psychological Sciences. The award recognizes departments that demonstrate a commitment to service in the psychological sciences. Departments selected for this award show a pattern of support for service from faculty at all levels, including a demonstration that service to the discipline is rewarded in faculty tenure and promotion. Successful Departments will also demonstrate that service to the profession is an integral part of training and mentoring.

In her citation letter, Sharon Brehm, Ph.D., President of the American Psychological Association, indicated that, “The support of your department for faculty participation on discipline-related association boards, editing journals, reviewing grant and research proposals, mentoring students and colleagues, service on university committees, and volunteering to provide disaster relief services and management training to those in need is an excellent model for other departments to follow. It is clear that culture of service is incorporated into the day-to-day activities of your faculty and students.”

The $5,000 award was presented on October 14, 2007 at the APA Science Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. The award will be used to support student travel to conferences or meetings in which they perform service to scientific organizations by serving on committees, organizing symposia, or performing science advocacy activities.
