Summary: Scientific research is affected by the norms and priorities currently active in the scientific community at large. For the past 10 years, novelty and significance have held center stage, with programmatic research pushed aside as resulting in “only incremental” science. I discuss possible reasons for the shift, outline some pitfalls of this approach, and describe how the pendulum may be shifting back to research utilizing reliability, replication and reproducibility as essential tools. |
